There is a spot in the middle of the desert - a place where many would politely term "the middle of nowhere". Here the sand is darker than the rest of the desert; standing in mute witness to a spot where some scholars believe a war was fought centuries before by some unknown civilization. In the center of this area, always covered by a shimmering haze, is what appears to be a huge pure black obelisk, in the middle of a strange canyon.
Planes attempting to overfly it have crashed. 'Mechs attempting to reach it have suffered electrical malfunctions, or worse... In several circumstances, battles were fought around it, and always seemed to ensure that more 'Mechs than normal ended up in the scrap pile, either pilot or 'Mech unable to be recovered. Those who got closest would always place mines, booby traps and other devices to defend the obelisk from others, but as often as not it was the person laying the devices that would be done in by them...
The obelisk is in the middle of a canyon, that has 4 entrances. No entrance is a straight path to the obelisk; twists and turns will quickly confuse any navigator, and there are offshoot paths that make this trek even more dangerous.
No one knows who placed the obelisk, or what it even is or does. Some people think it is made of a super-advanced, lighter and stronger metal that could make 'Mechs better armored and faster. Others seem to think it is a cache of technology that will allow mankind to roam the stars once again. The only thing everyone seems to be able to agree on is that it is potentially valuable, and none of the other 'Corps should have it. The price already paid in blood and metal may ultimately make this a Pyrrhic victory, but no one's willing to give up... yet.
This location has been deemed Serenity. Not that it has been calm but should be left alone. For those that speak of it with wisdom it should be left alone. Only death lives there, and that is what it will bring to all that enter. Few have entered the location and have dueled there. The closer to the obelisk the higher the chance of setting off some sort of defense device, be it a mine, trip wire, or explosive charge. To this day it is used only for a challenge of boasting 'Mech pilots. This still usually consumes both parties boasting who is the better.
