A Swiss man has become the first person to fly solo across the English Channel using a single jet-propelled wing.

Yves Rossy landed safely after the 22-mile (35.4 km) flight from Calais to Dover, which had been twice postponed this week because of bad weather.

The former military pilot took less than 10 minutes to complete the crossing and parachute to the ground.

The 49-year-old flew on a plane to more than 8,200ft (2,500m), ignited jets on a wing on his back, and jumped out.

I hear many people talking about flying cars, or jetpacks that would obsolete roads.

However, the main argument against it, once it fails, there is no safety harness, no foam mat, nothing. There is no safety incase of failure. Its essentially a BASE jump from an already free falling object.
Parachutes are impractical. Just the skill involved. Most parachuting injuries occur under deployed canopies. There is no way anyone can convince me that all drivers on the road have the intelligence to learn how to pilot any type of vehicle in the air. (/rant before it turns into a 10,000 word essay)

That said, the technology is still new, 50 years, if they continue to develop this, the military applications are limitless.

I dont see much in the way of civilian application considering how the FAA likes to have total control over anything flying >2,000 feet.

I agree...
Can you image the airways with people in flying cars, while talking on a cell phone?  There are many accidents with just roads (and that is 2D)... and in 3D. ouch.

But I can image in the near future of flyable vehicles in which you can drive to an airport, make the flight plan, and then take the vehicle onto the runway for flight.  Fly, using aircraft regulations, land at an airport, and then drive off (of course, after closing the flight plan).
