I would say, harvesters are open for attacks.  Thus place harvesters in safe areas or places that hardly anyone will travel to.  Or figure out some way to protect such areas...

Maybe make some harvesters mobile and then you could make some nice starter missions being an escort/defensive duty.

This thread's been dead for a while but I'd like to throw in a suggestion. That is every corporation is going to have it's own N.P.C. run Harvesters gathering resources for it's corporate business that they use to run their day to days and pay players for running missions. But I also think that players should be able to personally pilot and harvesters to gather their own resources and that they should be vulnerable to attack. After all what are independent factions going to do for resources when the break off from the "Big 4"? They can't rely on salvaged materials alone. I guess they could hire N.P.C. harvester pilots kind of like mercenaries. However if hired harvesters are used they should yield less than a player harvesting depending on mercenary cost and player's harvesting skill.
